I watched “Carlo Giuliani: A Boy” on the Sundance Channel yesterday. It reminded exactly why I started to get involved in politics in the first place: good kids like him are beaten, imprisoned, tortured, and murdered for standing up to the same money-driven international system that is poluting the environment, screwing the people who actually do the work, and generally reducing everyone’s lives to a shitty, unrewarding drudgery contest. More directly related to the movie, I’m reminded of something George Orwell said:
“I have no particular love for the idealized ‘worker’ as he appears in the bourgeois Communist’s mind, but when I see an actual flesh-and-blood worker in conflict with his natural enemy, the policeman, I do not have to ask myself which side I am on.”
In this particular instance I choose to transpose “worker” with “idealist”, but the sentiment remains the same.
Basically, yesterday was a swift kick in the ass, one which I really needed. I’m thinking that if time, space, and money were no object, I’d have been standing outside the White House with a placard that read “We Have Not Forgotten,” scrawled just above a circle-A :-).
