So I’m slightly closer to getting my system back to 100% after the Jumper Incident. I now know roughly why it couldn’t find any fonts, and am rebuilding GNOME 2.6 (again) in anticipation of reading my now 11-day backlog of mail (probably somewhere around 7,000-11,000 messages, if the past is any guide). The answer is that I botched the initial build by not setting the PATH, LD_PRELOAD_PATH, and PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variables properly, so it was pulling the debian version of the Xft (font rendering) library when linking, but the custom version when running. This then polluted every app in the build… Ahh the joys of a 0-day desktop. 😉
