I’ve been meaning to post instructions on how to use 3ddesktop for the default workspace switching keys in Metacity. It’s just a trivial but tedious poking through gconf-editor or gconftool, or simply running “gconftool-2 --load 3ddesktop-workspace-switch.xml”. Note: that file will overwrite the metacity key-commands 10, 11, and 12, but you can backup your existing config by running “gconftool-2 --dump "/apps/metacity" > backup.xml”.
P.S.: Obviously, this requires a recent 3ddesktop and a DRI-enabled hardware-GL-supporting setup to not suck, but there are screenshots available. It was too slow to be practical on a Matrox G400/32MB at 1600x1200x32bpp, but works fine on an nVidia Vanta LT at 1152x864x32bpp with the proprietary driver, so that should give you an idea of the hardware requirements. Have fun 🙂
